Unlock the full journey of character transformation with the Archetypal Character Arc Bundle – a complete set of six in-depth writing worksheets that guide your characters from innocent beginnings to wise culmination. (Discounted so you get two free!)

Each fillable, printable PDF in this bundle focuses on the six major archetypal character arcs, covering every stage from the coming-of-age Maiden Arc to the transcendental wisdom of the Mage Arc. Created by writing mentor K.M. Weiland (author of the well-known guides Creating Character Arcs and Writing Archetypal Character Arcs), this comprehensive kit equips writers to craft authentic, resonant character journeys across all genres.

Includes All 6 Archetypal Arc Worksheets:

  • Maiden Arc (Coming-of-Age): Guides you through the youthful journey from innocence to independence (the foundational coming-of-age story).
  • Hero Arc (Hero’s Journey): Maps out the classic champion’s quest to overcome trials and prove their mettle.
  • Queen Arc (Rise-to-Power Archetype): Explores the challenges of a mature ruler learning to wield power responsibly in relationships and community.
  • King Arc (Leader Archetype): Outlines a character’s growth into a mature leader, focusing on legacy, authority, and sacrifice.
  • Crone Arc (Rise-to-Elderhood Archetype): Details an elder’s path to wisdom, mentoring, and making peace with life’s journey.
  • Mage Arc (Ego Transcendence Archetype): Illuminates the wise mentor’s arc as he embraces final challenges and imparts knowledge to the next generation.

(*Note: Although the archetypes alternate from feminine to masculine, they can be taken by any character of any gender. The worksheet questions are gender-neutral.)

Comprehensive Beat Sheets:

Each worksheet provides a step-by-step plot beat sheet tailored to its archetype. You’ll be guided through every critical turning point – from the initial call or challenge, through mid-arc trials, to the climactic resolution.

Dozens of Guided Questions:

Each arc workbook contains dozens of thought-provoking prompts (approximately 30–40 per arc) that dig into your character’s mindset, fears, growth, and choices at each stage. These questions help you flesh out motivations, conflicts, and themes specific to that arc, so your character’s transformation feels organic and compelling.

Bonus Quick Guides & Resources:

The bundle comes with quick-reference cheat sheets summarizing each archetype’s beats for easy scanning while you write. Additionally, enjoy curated resource links for further reading on archetypal arcs – perfect for writers who want to deepen their understanding of the storytelling theory behind each stage.

Flexible, Fillable, & Printable:

All worksheets are provided as editable PDFs (and Word documents) you can fill in on your computer or tablet. Prefer pen and paper? Simply print the pages out. The clean, organized layout gives you ample space to jot down ideas or answer prompts. You can reuse these templates for multiple characters or stories, making them an economical investment for your writing craft.

For Any Genre or Story Length:

Whether you’re writing fantasy, romance, historical fiction, YA, or sci-fi, these archetypal arcs are universal. They apply to protagonists of any gender and can shape short stories, novels, or series in any genre. Use the Maiden/Hero arcs for youthful heroes, Queen/King for characters assuming leadership or parenthood, and Crone/Mage for mentor figures or finales in a series. This bundle is especially useful if you plan multi-generational sagas or want to track one character’s growth across a lifetime of adventures.

Priceless Resource

As a long-time fan of KM and her blog, I've found her to be an incredible resource in my writing journey. So much so that over time I’ve added her resources to my Scrivener templates, specifically her character interviews and character arcs (positive, flat, and negative). I’ve had to consult the latter a couple of times to work out a plot angle, and they’ve helped me out immensely. Now I see she’s added worksheets for the archetypal journeys, which are companion pieces to her book on archetypal characters that she’s blogged about as well. I’m eager to add them to my Scrivener template.

If you haven’t read her posts and her book the archetypal journeys, I urge you to do so. Especially if you’re only aware of the Hero’s Journey, and don’t realize other journeys are an option. The HJ is useful for a specific type of plot, but what happens after the dragon is slain, and the external threat to the kingdom is done with? With a Conan you get an Adventurer-->Conquerer-->King progression, but the Hero’s Journey only slots neatly into the first arc.

Then there’s a Cinderella, who must battle darkness within the kingdom to get to happily ever after. But what happens when she is queen? When she is a mother? If you’re like me and you love sagas and series, and wondered how you’d write, for instance, a Miles Vorkosigan (who starts as an adventurer) and progress through increasingly rich storylines through the years, then take a good look at the Archetypal Journeys worksheets (and the companion book).
