Bring your nurturing characters to life with the Enneagram Type 2 Cheat Sheet, focusing on the Helper personality and how they grow or falter in a story. Type 2 characters are caring, generous, and relationship-oriented – they thrive on being needed.

This guide (created by K.M. Weiland author of Creating Character Arcs) gives you a concise roadmap for both Positive Arcs (a Helper finding healthy self-worth) and Negative Arcs (a Helper’s giving nature leading to self-neglect or manipulation).

  • Core Type 2 Traits: Understand your Type 2 character at a glance. The cheat sheet outlines basic fear (of being unwanted or unloved) and basic desire (to feel loved and needed). Keywords for Type 2 include empathetic, people-pleasing, supportive, possessive. You’ll immediately grasp that your character likely derives identity from helping others and might struggle with boundaries or acknowledging their own needs.

  • Positive Arc – From Pride to Unconditional Love: The cheat sheet sketches a Positive Change Arc for a Type 2 that centers on learning self-love and balance. Early in the story, your Type 2 character might overextend themselves, always saying yes, possibly meddling or giving unsolicited help because they believe the Lie: “It's not okay to have your own needs.” The arc’s beats could include: early catalyst (perhaps burnout or a situation where they can’t help, prompting self-reflection), challenges (learning to receive help or to assert their own needs, which feels uncomfortable but necessary), Moment of Truth (realizing their worth isn’t solely defined by others’ dependence; maybe a loved one assures them they’re valued for who they are, not just what they do), and Resolution (sets healthy boundaries, continues to be generous but also respects their own well-being, resulting in even richer, mutual relationships). You can map your character’s emotional growth from self-sacrificing savior to a confident individual who experiences genuine love and friendship, not one-sided caretaking.

  • Negative Arc – From Pride to Manipulation: For a more tragic or antagonistic take, see the Negative Arc outline. A Type 2’s giving can turn dark if their fear of rejection dominates. Your character arc might discover the descent into the Lie (they double down on earning love, perhaps by smothering or controlling others “for their own good”), Midpoint (they feel unappreciated and grow resentful; could be a scenario where their help is rejected, fueling bitterness), breaking point (they manipulate or guilt-trip someone to keep them close, or sacrifice something important in a martyred gesture, expecting recognition that never comes), and downfall (the character either collapses from emotional exhaustion, alienates everyone by becoming bitter (“After all I’ve done for you!”), or in a villainous context, a Type 2 might orchestrate crises just to be needed. The worksheet will guide you through these stages, ensuring a believable negative trajectory.

  • Quick Reference Layout: The Type 2 Cheat Sheet offers two separate fillable PDFs. It divides the Positive and Negative Arcs for clarity and uses concise questions and examples, making it easy to scan while writing. Pin it near your outline or keep it on your tablet. Whenever you’re unsure how your Type 2 character might react to a plot twist, a glance here can provide direction aligned with their Enneagram pattern.

  • Bonuses Included: You also get a handy reference sheet showing the main points and differences of all of the nine Enneagram types, as well as a detailed Resources PDF with links to dozens of helpful tools for both the Enneagram and character arcs, and a Quick Tips sheet with more insight into Type 2's personality.

Using the Enneagram Type 2 Cheat Sheet, you’ll ensure that your nurturing, caring characters are portrayed with complexity and realism. Their emotional arc, whether of heartwarming growth or heartrending collapse, will resonate because it stems from a relatable human desire: to be loved. Armed with this guide, you can avoid common pitfalls (like making the Helper character a two-dimensional saint or a caricature) and instead write a Type 2 who feels real, with virtues, flaws, struggles, and triumphs that will engage your readers’ hearts.
