Plot your novel with clarity and confidence using the Story Structure Beat Sheet & Plot Outline – a quick-reference plotting template that distills proven storytelling structure into an easy-to-follow format.

Whether you’re writing a thriller, romance, fantasy, or any genre, this guide (created by K.M. Weiland, award-winning author of Structuring Your Novel) will help you ensure your story hits all the right beats at the right times. No more sagging middles or aimless Second Acts. With this outline, you’ll map out a cohesive narrative arc from start to finish.

Complete 3-Act Beat Sheet: This printable, fillable outline walks you through all the major story beats in a classic three-act structure. It includes slots and prompts for:

  • Hook: The opening moment that grabs attention. (E.g., a glimpse of the protagonist’s life or the story’s tone, with a touch of intrigue.)

  • Inciting Incident: The event that kicks the story into motion and upsets the protagonist’s status quo.

  • First Plot Point (End of First Act): The Point of No Return that thrusts the character into a new world or situation (setting the stakes and goal).

  • First Pinch Point: A reminder of the antagonist’s power or the stakes that keeps tension rising.

  • Midpoint (Second Plot Point): The major middle turning point or revelation that changes the game, often shifting the protagonist from reaction to action.

  • Second Pinch Point: Another jolt in which things get worse or the antagonist flexes, driving the conflict into the final act setup.

  • Third Plot Point (End of Third Act): A dark moment or major setback. Often the protagonist’s lowest point or a big twist that propels the character toward the Climax.

  • Climax: The final confrontation or series of events in which the main conflict comes to a head.

  • Climactic Moment: The peak moment of the story (i.e., defeat of the antagonist, accomplishment of the goal).

  • Resolution: The aftermath and tying up of loose ends. How have he characters and world changed?

Each beat on the sheet includes a brief question to prompt your ideas (for example: “How will the First Plot Point at the end of the First Act force your protagonist to leave the Normal World and engage in the conflict

with the antagonistic force?”). You simply fill in your plot events for each section, creating a high-level outline that ensures pacing and tension are inbuilt.

Ensures Pacing and Tension: By following the beat sheet, you’ll naturally pace your story in a way that keeps readers engaged. The outline helps prevent the “sagging middle” by highlighting the Midpoint as a pivotal moment, and it reminds you to have Pinch Points – those often-forgotten beats that keep the antagonist’s threat fresh. With your plot events aligned to these beats, you can be confident there’s no dull section: each part of your story has a purpose, building toward the Climax.

Flexible for Any Genre: While grounded in classic structure theory (à la three-act, Hero’s Journey influences, etc.), this template is not rigidly genre-specific. It’s a versatile framework: whether you’re writing a mystery (where the Midpoint might be a big clue reveal), a romance (Midpoint could be the first kiss or big complication), or an epic fantasy (First Plot Point might be the hero leaving home on the quest), the beat sheet adapts to your needs. The prompts are phrased generally, focusing on the function of each beat (e.g., “Midpoint: "What 'centerpiece' event at the Midpoint (2nd Plot Point) will force your protagonist to stop reacting to the antagonistic force and start acting more proactively?”), so you can tailor it to your story’s unique events.

Fillable & Printable: The Story Structure Beat Sheet comes as an editable PDF as well as a Word doc outline. You can type your plot summary for each beat directly into the PDF fields, building a succinct outline that you can save, edit, and refer to as you draft. If you prefer pen and paper brainstorming, print the sheets out and jot down your ideas in the provided spaces. The format is concise, making it easy to get a bird’s-eye view of your whole story at once.

Bonus Guides: The pack also includes a graphic overviewing all of the structural beats covered in the worksheet and their positions within the overall story structure. You can also use the in-depth Resource bonus PDF to access links to dozens of free structure and plot resources.

Developed by an Expert: This plotting guide is built on principles from story expert K.M. Weiland’s teachings on story structure (as found in her award-winning book Structuring Your Novel and her blog HelpingWritersBecomeAuthors.com). It synthesizes those insights into a handy tool so you don’t have to flip through chapters to remember what comes when. Essentially, you have a plot coach on paper ensuring you don’t forget that crucial Inciting Event or that you properly escalate stakes by the Second Pinch Point.

Because it’s a reusable template, you can print/fill a new one for every project you undertake. Great time savings

I've been making similar tables, but this one is much easier to see and I expect it to save a significant amount of time!
