Negative Character Arcs

The Hidden Pattern of Self-Deception

70-Minute Masterclass

What Happens When a Character Encounters the Truth—And Can't Accept It?

Negative Change Arcs offer some of storytelling's most powerful explorations of transformation. Instead of showing us how characters overcome the Lie the Character Believes, they reveal what happens when they can't.

In this class, we'll explore the deeper pattern that connects the three Negative Arcs: Disillusionment, Fall, and Corruption.

You'll discover:

  • How the Disillusionment Arc functions as a crucial pivot between positive and negative transformation.
  • How the Fall Arc dramatizes a character's refusal of an already-glimpsed Truth.
  • How the Corruption Arc traces a character's growing identification with and ultimately conscious embrace of a Lie.

We'll break down each arc beat by beat, examining how character development aligns with plot structure and theme to create a cohesive progression.

If you want to write tragic character arcs with greater structural precision, thematic depth, and an understanding of why these tragic transformations work, this class gives you the framework.

In this 70-minute class, you will learn:

  • How the Disillusionment, Fall, and Corruption Arcs function as three distinct types of Negative Character Arc—and how they connect as stages within a larger pattern of devolution.
  • Why the Disillusionment Arc is closely related to the Positive Change Arc, and how a character's encounter with a thematic Truth can become the pivot toward either further growth or further descent.
  • How the Lie the Character Believes evolves differently in each Negative Arc and determines the character's ultimate relationship with the thematic Truth.
  • How to structure each of the three Negative Arcs beat by beat, from the Hook through the Climax and Resolution.
  • How major structural moments such as the Inciting Event, First Plot Point, and Midpoint reveal and escalate the character’s tragic transformation.
  • How to integrate plot, character arc, and theme so the external conflict creates meaningful consequences for the character's increasingly distorted choices.
  • How to recognize the deeper pattern of self-deception underlying Negative Arcs, so you can write antiheroic transformations that feel psychologically convincing, thematically resonant, and structurally complete.

Another amazing compilation of insights

I have watched three of the four classes this year and so glad I did. This last one brings together Katie's insights into something profoundly useful as it is deep enough to constantly go back to for confirmation. Although I am not writing a negative arc, knowing where they sit in the bigger scheme of things gave me insights into my own project in real time. Katie's work is always connected to a larger psychological framework which is the real power of her material. This made explicit here - thanks Katie for your work. Jim
