The Villain as an Aspect of the Hero

A New Way to Think About Story Conflict

60-Minute Masterclass

Want to write conflict that feels mythic and archetypal?

Most writers think of conflict as a clash between opposing forces: hero versus villain, protagonist versus antagonist, good versus evil.

But what if the deeper psychological point of story conflict isn’t about defeating an enemy at all?

In this class, we’ll explore a deeper way of understanding conflict in your story—not as confrontation, but as the psyche encountering its own fragmentation.

In this view, the antagonist is no longer simply “the villain,” but a force representing the protagonist's disowned potential, unresolved tension, or even just necessary polarity.

We’ll explore how polarity drives narrative movement, how opposition reveals inner fragmentation, and how meaningful transformation can happen through integration rather than conquest.

By the end, you’ll have a practical framework for crafting conflict that strengthens theme, clarifies structure, and gives your story a deeper sense of cohesion and resonance.

In this 60-minute class, you will learn:

  • Why story conflict is not exclusively about defeating an external enemy
  • How the antagonist represents the protagonist’s disowned potential
  • Why polarity is the real engine of mythic story structure
  • How to design opposition that reveals your protagonist's inner fragmentation
  • The difference between conflict that feels dramatic and conflict that feels archetypal
  • How to structure your story's Climax around integration rather than conquest
  • How to know if antagonistic energy should be redeemed, transformed, or dissolved
  • Why a lack of conflict usually shows a misalignment in the story's underlying psychology—and how to correct it

A Deep Dive into Character Development

I highly recommend this course - I am mapping out a novel and think this is a lecture I will return to several times in the development of my protagonist and the cast of characters - other writing courses I have taken talk about giving each character a well rounded back story but don't go into detail about how aspects of different characters might play off each other - this course is really helping me think about the characters in complex and interconnected ways and in ways that resonate with main theme and drive the plot - and speaks directly to a concern I had but had not articulated which was (as KM puts it) "[in developing your character] if one pole is purely evil and the other purely virtuous the polarity will collapse into caricature". I am sure as I progress I will find much more to ponder, at the moment thinking about the connection between villain energy as a disowned possibility within the protagonist, and the ways configurations map onto life cycle stages is extremely helpful.
